Review by The Minstrel Avenue Record:

A Bit Too Close features Paul's earliest writing, performing, and recording attempts, thus capturing a sound reminiscent of his college acoustic performances. Although most album songs are acoustically oriented and very "folky" in nature, the occasional incorporation of electric instruments and heavy percussion into several song arrangements allows the album to gravitate toward rock'n'roll tendencies at times.

Surprising Paul's folk audience, the album opens with an upbeat title track featuring a driving electric keyboard. This risky approach works to Paul's advantage, introducing a songwriting and performing versatility that his fans have now come to expect.

However, his renowned folk songs are never overshadowed by this versatility. Akin to the story-telling ballads of Harry Chapin or Bob Dylan, the undisputed hit of the album is I Finally Paid the Toll, a story of self-examination (with religious overtones) which tells us that life's experiences, good or bad, can help us deal with the stressful uncertainty of the future--and even emerge victorious.
