Review by The Minstrel Avenue Record: After four other successful albums, Paul released Won't You Leave Me Alone? in 1994. Catapulting off the Los Angeles area radio airplay success of the singles One Guitar and What Will It Take?, the album showcases snappy tunes complete with coherent lyrics as well as intimate, poetic ballads with dynamic arrangements. Critically acclaimed upon its original release, each cut features Paul's inimitable style, often referred to as the Beatles' melodic sensibility crossed with the urgency of vintage Costello. Despite this familiarity, each song in this collection remains notably unique, delivering a fresh slant on his songwriting and production. This effectively triggers the album to favorably stand out among Paul's previous releases. Interestingly, Paul always considered this album to be a collection of unperfected demos, hastily released to meet an artificial timeline. Perhaps that strategy worked; Won't You Leave Me Alone? remains his best-selling album to date. |
