Review by The Minstrel Avenue Record:

During the 1988-1989 timeframe, Paul devoted much of his time to scoring music for movie soundtracks, with significant emphasis on one particular film. This new focus saw his music become noticeably more moody and profound, but unfortunately the film that inspired most of this work was cancelled. The music from this film was shelved until two years later when it re-emerged as a collection of songs on the 1991 release The Man That You Never Knew.

The songs' subtle underlying lyrical themes unite them in a unique way, giving the collection a cohesiveness unlike Benshoof's previous albums. This intertwining thematic structure moves loosely from the subject of "imprisonment" to "avoiding imprisonment" while simultaneously questioning whether anybody--including ourselves--really knows who we are.

While the clever manipulation and unity of themes make the album an enjoyable listen, the songs also work as stand-alone entities. Consequently, album cuts Never Run Forever and Should the Music Ever Fail enjoyed popularity that rivaled much of Benshoof's earlier work.
